Buying a used car online or through some local dealer can always be a tough decision. After all, you can't decide by just looking at the car. It is therefore vital to research thoroughly and gain detailed information about the car's looks, practicality, performance, running costs etc. Here are some things which will be helpful to know while buying used Volvo XC90 cars.

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-sized seven-seat SUV which was first seen in 2002. Introduced to reflect the huge increase in popularity of 4x4s in the decade up to its arrival, the XC90 went on to become Volvo's most popular vehicle in its range, thanks to big sales in the US.

When introduced, the XC90 was unique in offering seating for up to seven, but rivals such as the Land Rover Discovery and BMW X5 can now offer the same, although they're invariably more costly to buy and run. For some odd reason, nobody before had offered an SUV with a seven-seat option, so while Volvo was late coming to the 4x4 party, at least it had something distinctive to offer with the XC90, even if the third row of seats was really for occasional use only.

Looks
At the front this takes the form of a new, more chrome-laden grille and a bigger Volvo badge. The rear sees redesigned lights, a full-width rear skid-plate and a greater level of colour coding than on previous models. The car also has a shorter roofline due to the sloping tailgate

Interior
Volvo interiors have a calming effect. The Swedish manufacturer likes to ensure its drivers are unhurried and unflustered and the Volvo XC90 is no exception. The latest model also incorporates new materials and upholsteries, such as Sovereign Hide leather to enhance the premium quality claims.

Performance
Buyers can now choose between three engines, two petrol and one diesel. The 185bhp D5 turbo-diesel six-speed automatic gearbox model we drove covers 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds and has a top speed of 118mph. This delivered plenty of punch when required to overtake but also felt smooth for cruising.

Running Costs
The two petrol-engine models fall into car tax band G, meaning a £300 annual bill until April 2008 when it increases to £400. Insurance will not be cheap with models ranging between Group 15 and 19.

Safety
The Volvo XC90 boasts plenty of kit to keep you out of trouble. The All Wheel Drive system reduces the chances of the driver losing control - as do driver aids dynamic stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake assist.

Before making purchase make sure you have tested the used Volvo XC90 for the above mentioned qualities. If safety is your main concern, be assured since the Volvo XC90 has received a full five star EuroNCAP crash test rating. It performs well on most other fronts.
